This portfolio represents four decades of image making. In addition to the influence of the urban social landscape and New Topographic photographers of the second half of the 20th century my greatest influence comes from 20th century American landscape painting. As with many artists there are the influences of memories from youth. There are memories of Ohio and Pennsylvania mill towns, of overnight railroad trips to summer camp, and of stops at diners after high school cross country meets. Images made on trips overseas in the 1980s are reflections of subsequent darker experiences .

The 20th century American landscape artist Charles Burchfield once commented that in the work of his contemporary Edward Hopper , "The sense of a brooding moment in the life of a human being is encountered again and again." I have also found America, at times, to be a bleak and lonely place.
